A delegation from Thailand presented an 80-volume World Tipiṭaka Saj-jʰā-ya Phonetic Edition to His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen today during a special ceremony held at the Grand Kuenrey Hall, Tashichhodzong in Thimphu.
The Tipiṭaka is the oldest complete collection of Buddhist scriptures. During the First Buddhist Council, three months after the Parinibbāna of Lord Buddha in Rājagaha, the disciples of Lord Buddha gathered to recite the Buddha’s teachings. The teachings were arranged and classified into what is called the Tipiṭaka.
The Significance of the Tipiṭaka
Also known as the Pāḷi Canon, the Tipiṭaka forms the doctrinal foundation of the Theravāda tradition of Buddhism. The Tipiṭaka is to the Theravāda tradition what Kaṅgyur and Teṅgyur are to the Mahāyāna Buddhist tradition. The World Tipiṭaka Saj-jʰā-ya Phonetic Editions are a specially transcribed version of the Tipiṭaka using a phonetic system in order to preserve and standardize the original Pāḷi pronunciation of the Tipiṭaka.
Facilitating Accurate Oral Transmission
These editions were developed to facilitate accurate oral transmission of the Tipiṭaka, ensuring that recitations maintain consistency across different linguistic backgrounds. They employ a phonetic script that represents the correct Pāḷi pronunciation, making it useful for monks, scholars, and practitioners who rely on oral chanting and memorization. The term Saj-jʰā-ya refers to the traditional recitation or chanting of Buddhist texts, often practiced in Theravāda monastic communities.
The World Tipiṭaka Saj-jʰā-ya Phonetic Editions
The World Tipiṭaka Saj-jʰā-ya Phonetic Editions comprise 80 volumes in two editions. The first edition, with 40 volumes, features the King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Edition with Pāḷi phonetic reference. It uses the Syām script together with the Roman script. These editions were first published in 2016 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the accession to the throne of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
A Testament to Bilateral Relations
The presentation of these revered texts to His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen by Thailand is a testament to the excellent relations between Bhutan and Thailand, anchored in the close bonds between the Royal Families of the two countries and their shared spiritual heritage.

contentment is the greatest wealth;
ཚི་ཏ་བདེ་བ་ནོར་བུ་ཆེ་ཤོས་;
vissāsaparamā ñāti,
A trusted friend is the greatest kin,
གཅེས་པའི་གྲོགས་པོ་ཉེ་ཚན་ཆེ་ཤོས་,
nibbānaṁ paramaṁ sukhaṁ.
Nibbāna is the greatest bliss.
མྱང་འདས་བདེ་བ་ཆེ་ཤོས་.
With the power of truthful speech,
And the merit of the Tipiṭaka Recitation,
We dedicated these meritorious deeds,
To the Buddhist Sovereign Monarchy of Bhutan.
May they be blessed with enduring
Peace and Happiness.
May the nation and people of Bhutan,
Flourish and continuously thrive,
By the guiding light of the Supreme Buddha,
Now and for always.

วันนี้ คณะผู้แทนจากประเทศไทยได้น้อมเกล้าฯ ถวายพระไตรปิฎกสากลฉบับสัชฌายะ ชุด 80 เล่ม แด่สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีและสมเด็จพระราชินี ณ พระราชวัง Grand Kuenrey Hall, Tashichhodzong ในเมืองทิมพู
พระไตรปิฎกปาฬิภาสา เป็นการรวบรวมพระคัมภีร์พุทธศาสนาที่สมบูรณ์และเก่าแก่ที่สุด ในช่วงปฐมสังคายนา สามเดือนหลังจากการเสด็จดับขันธปรินิพพานของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ณ กรุงราชคฤห์ เหล่าอรหันตสาวกของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าได้รวมตัวกันเพื่อท่องจำคำสอนของพระพุทธองค์ คำสอนเหล่านี้ได้รับการจัดระเบียบและจำแนกออกเป็นสิ่งที่เรียกว่าพระไตรปิฎก
ความสำคัญของพระไตรปิฎก
พระไตรปิฎก หรือที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ ปาฬิ เป็นรากฐานทางหลักธัมม์ในพระพุทธศาสนานิกายเถรวาท พระไตรปิฎกมีความสำคัญต่อนิกายเถรวาทเช่นเดียวกับที่คัมภีร์ Kangyur และ Tengyur มีต่อนิกายมหายาน พระไตรปิฎกสากล ฉบับสัชฌายะนี้เป็นพระไตรปิฎกฉบับที่ถอดเสียงเป็นพิเศษ (Pāḷi Phonetic Transcription) โดยใช้ระบบการออกเสียง (Phonetic Symbol) เพื่อรักษาและจัดระบบการออกเสียงปาฬิภาสาดั้งเดิม (อดีตเรียกกันว่า ภาษาบาลี) ในพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ
อำนวยความสะดวกในการถอดเสียงปาฬิด้วยวาจาที่ถูกต้องแม่นยำ
พระไตรปิฎกฉบับนี้จัดทำขึ้นเพื่ออำนวยความสะดวกในการถอดเสียงปาฬิในพระไตรปิฎกด้วยวาจาที่ถูกต้องแม่นยำ ทำให้มั่นใจได้ว่าการอ่านจะมีความสอดคล้องกันในแต่ละอักษร (Translitetation) โดยใช้ อักษรเสียง หรือ "สัทอักษร" (Phonetic Alphabet) ที่แสดงการออกเสียงปาฬิภาสาที่ถูกต้อง ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์สำหรับคณะสงฆ์ นักวิชาการ และผู้ปฏิบัติธัมม์ที่อาศัยการสวดมนต์และการท่องจำด้วยวาจา คำว่า สัชฌายะ (Saj-jʰā-ya) หมายถึงการอ่านออกเสียงปาฬิภาสา (Pāḷi Recitation) ในพระคัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนาตามกฎไวยากรณ์ ซึ่งมักปฏิบัติกันในชุมชนสงฆ์ของนิกายเถรวาท

พระไตรปิฎกสากลฉบับสัชฌายะ 80 เล่ม แบ่งเป็นสองฉบับ ฉบับแรก มี 40 เล่ม คือฉบับ ภ.ป.ร. พร้อมอ้างอิงการออกเสียงปาฬิภาสา กับ อักษรสยาม (Original Syām-Script Manuscript) และ สัททะอักขะระโรมัน (Roman-Script Transcription) และ ฉบับที่สอง 40 เล่ม คือฉบับ ส.ก. ถอดเสียงปาฬิ เป็น โน้ตเสียงดนตรีพระไตรปิฎก - เสียงโมโนโทน (The Pāḷi Monotone Music Notation) ฉบับสัชฌายะทั้งสองชุดตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2559 เพื่อเฉลิมฉลองครบรอบ 70 ปี แห่งการเสด็จขึ้นครองราชย์ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระบรมชนกาธิเบศร มหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช บรมนาถบพิตร
เป็นเครื่องพิสูจน์ความสัมพันธ์ทวิภาคี
การถวายพระไตรปิฎกสัชฌายะอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์ชุดนี้แด่สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีและสมเด็จพระราชินีแห่งภูฏานโดยประเทศไทย เป็นเครื่องพิสูจน์ถึงความสัมพันธ์อันแน่นแฟ้นระหว่างราชอาณาจักรภูฏานและราชอาณาจักรไทย ซึ่งเป็นความผูกพันอันใกล้ชิดระหว่างพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ของทั้งสองประเทศและมรดกทางจิตวิญญาณที่มีร่วมกัน
